How to file your McHenry County appeal
- 1
Watch for your township's publication
McHenry County publishes each township's assessments in the Northwest Herald or Woodstock Independent on its own schedule, from summer through December. Your 30-day window runs from publication.
- 2
Review your assessment notice
Check the value and your property's characteristics for errors before the window opens.
- 3
Talk to your township assessor
Many valuation questions can be resolved directly with the assessor without a formal appeal.
- 4
File with the Board of Review
Submit your appeal with evidence — recent comparable sales for market-value appeals, or similar assessments for uniformity appeals — before your township's final filing deadline.
- 5
Get the decision
The Board of Review decides and mails the result. You can appeal further to the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB).
Good to know
- 2026 township deadlines are posted on the county site as each township is published.
File with the official McHenry County portal
Appeals are free to file with the county. Use the official McHenry County Board of Review — and if your home is in Cook County instead, we have a step-by-step guide and kit for that.
